LLR for Academics

Library & Learning Resources September Orientation Event booking

With the opening of the LSBU Hub for the academic year 22-23, Library and Learning Resources will be running a centralised in-person orientation event in w/c 12th and w/c 19th September. This event will run in the library at all three campuses and replaces induction week lectures.

Why are we running an LLR orientation event?

The orientation event will empower new students find their way around their campus library and will cover all the basics that induction lectures have covered in previous years including how to borrow books, where to get help, how to join workshops and make appointments.

Students will learn about the wide variety of support and services we have on offer across all of our campus libraries and build their confidence using the physical space after several years of Covid-19 disruption.

What will students learn by attending their LLR orientation event?

Students completing the event will all receive a postcard summarising the learning objectives and directing them to the online information they accessed throughout the structured activity. The learning objectives are:

  • You need your student ID to enter the building and should always carry it with you
  • Printing is available on a University Multi-Functional Device (MFD) and you need to add print credit to your account to print your work
  • Find materials on our shelves using the LSBU catalogue and issue it to your account using our self-service machines
  • Where to return items that you have borrowed once you have finished with them
  • That the Library has different zones to work in and bookable group study rooms to suit different learning styles and needs
  • How to access Eduroam, find a PC in the Library, how to use your own device on-site and where to find a laptop to borrow
  • The location of the Digital Skills Centre and that the staff there can help you improve your digital literacy and digital skills
  • The location of library skills teaching rooms where you will find regular workshops and training sessions for you to access throughout the year to support your learning
  • How to book 1-2-1 appointments with the Information Skills Librarians, the Skills for Learning Team and the Digital Skills Training Team
  • The Help Desk is your first port of call for Library queries and questions for Student IT Support
  • LLR staff are welcoming and friendly and will support you throughout your time at LSBU!

How can I book a slot for my students to attend the orientation activity?

In an effort to manage numbers, cohorts at the Southwark campus should be booked in via our booking calendar. Depending on the size of your cohort, students might need to be split across more than one time slot: LSBU Hub LLR orientation calendar.

Sessions at Havering and Croydon are being arranged directly by LLR staff. If you want to check on arrangements for your programme, please email askalibrarian@lsbu.ac.uk and we'll get back to you.

What other support will be available from LLR for staff/students during Welcome Week?

  • Our annual Get Ahead programme for incoming students will run 23rd-25th August and slides/recordings from our previous cohorts are already available. For more information or to direct your students, please see the Get Ahead webpages here. All LSBU applicants and existing students are welcome and the sessions may be particularly helpful to interrupted/repeating students.

  • We will be providing an LLR induction video to add to course Moodle shells as in previous years. This will be shared in early September.

  • The Information Skills Librarians, Digital Skills Training team and Skills for Learning team will be running 'bitesize' workshops after Welcome Week has finished. Students can sign up to these if they want to learn a little more about the skills they will need to succeed in their programme - e.g. referencing, using Microsoft Office, academic writing - prior to any scheduled embedded teaching sessions as part of the course programme. Details and booking instructions will be shared via our LLR events calendar here.

Book an Information Skills or Digital Skills embedded teaching session

Embedded teaching sessions for September start courses (L4)

For courses starting in mid-late September, embedded library and digital skills teaching sessions are available to book from October onwards. These sessions are best scheduled preceding an assessment where you would expect students to use resources, so probably not in the first weeks of term unless they have an early assignment submission.

We now have some great classroom spaces in the Hub and can facilitate teaching hands-on sessions to more groups simultaneously, so please consider booking workshops rather than lectures as students always find these more helpful and effective. To book teaching sessions, please use our online form here:

Embedded teaching sessions for early start courses and returning students

For early starting courses and returning students, embedded library and digital skills teaching sessions can be booked throughout September if needed and where resourcing is possible. Please email Amelia Hellyer, Information Skills Manager and Jancie Johnson, Digital Skills Manager if you would like to discuss the requirements of your cohort.

We always recommend scheduling sessions at the point when students are beginning a piece of research or assessment. To book teaching sessions, use the online form above.
