Help Desk

What you need to know...

Your first port of call for help with Library, Student IT and Student Life queries

We have a Help Desk in each campus library where you can come for help and advice. You do not need to make an appointment, but make sure you check the opening hours of the Desk in your campus library before visiting us. These change during holiday periods.

You can use any of our LSBU libraries to study and borrow from or return to. For example you could request a book from Croydon to pick up at Havering but return it to The Hub at Southwark.

Examples of Library support we provide:

  • Checking your library account
  • Finding books and other print and DVD resources in the library
  • Borrowing and returning resources
  • Directional support
  • Signposting other services, such as the Information Skills Librarians, Digital Skills Centre, Archives etc.
  • DDS assistance ( see link below for specific help we provide to students registered with DDS)

Examples of IT support we provide:

  • Accessing your LSBU account including E-mail and Moodle
  • Submitting coursework assignments
  • Resetting your LSBU password
  • Connecting to our Eduroam Wi-Fi network on laptop and mobile devices
  • Software downloads including Microsoft Office
  • Software troubleshooting

Examples of Student Life Centre support we provide:

  • Stamping Student Status Letters, railcard applications, NHS Learning support fund applications

  • Advise on the best people to contact regarding finance, extra funding and accommodation
  • Signpost to DDS and Mental Health and Wellbeing services
  • Book appointments with Senior Student Advisors
  • Changing address and phone numbers

Other services

At the help desk you can also top up your print credit, purchase stationery and borrow items such as chargers and laptops.

We loan laptops for day use, they must be returned by 4.45pm. You can also borrow for overnight use but they must be returned by 10am the following morning. If you do not return on time you will automatically be charged at £2.00 for every hour it is late.

Book holds

If you have reserved a book from another library via our Intersite loan service or Interlibrary loans you can collect them from the trolley next to the self service machine. They will be labelled with your student number. You will get an email to your LSBU account notifying you that your items are ready for collection. Please remember to check the books out to yourself as they are not checked out to you when placed on the trolley. You have 7 days to collect your hold, after which it will be automatically sent on to the next person waiting in the list or back to its 'home' library.

Please note that you cannot place a hold for a book already on the shelf at your 'home' library. If Havering Library does not have a copy of the book you want but The Hub at Southwark or Croydon has a copy, you can use the inter-site loan request form to have a copy sent for pickup.
