What is it?

Independent learning is the ability to take charge of your own educational journey by assessing your own needs, setting goals for yourself, managing your time, and seeking out resources and opportunities to learn. It involves self-motivation, critical thinking and reflection.

Why is it important?

Independent learning is the foundation of academic success because it empowers you to take control of your education. It helps you develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, fosters a deeper understanding of subjects, and prepares you for lifelong learning. By becoming an independent learner, you can adapt to new challenges and continuously improve your knowledge and skills.

Examples

  • Setting Personal Goals: Defining clear, achievable academic goals and creating a realistic plan to reach them.
  • Self-Directed Study: Finding and using resources for study (e.g. books, videos, LinkedIn learning courses).
  • Critical Thinking: Analysing and evaluating information independently to form your own understanding and opinions.
  • Reflective Practice: Regularly reflecting on your learning experiences to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

How can I learn how to do it?

You are not expected to become an independent learner straight away, but you can develop your ability by:

  • Learning the skills necessary for managing your own learning, such as time management, study skills and reflection.
  • Building your confidence by being positive about your achievements.
  • Developing your critical thinking skills.
  • Looking for support when you need it (that's part of being an independent learner too!).
  • Looking at online resources and finding books in the Library about study skills and independent learning.
  • Seeking and using feedback to guide and assess your learning path.
  • Assessing your abilities and taking action to improve in the weaker areas...
    • Give yourself a mark out of 10 for each of the areas in the menu for this section. Choose the areas you need to develop and you can find resources right here in the Skills for Success site that will help you to build your independent learning abilities.
