Lexis+

An introductory user guide for Lexis+

Searching within Content Types

Lexis+ allows you to refine your search by selecting specific 'Content Types'. This focuses your search on the specific type of information you are trying to retrieve and will mean the search only displays results from within that content type.

Below, the guide focuses on searching for legislation and cases as two examples but the same process applies to searching for 'Books & Journals', 'News', 'Dockets' etc.

Searching for Legislation

If you wish to search only for legislation within Lexis+ , enter the name of the legislation you seek in the search field and then click the 'All'  dropdown box to the far right of the search field.

Here you can select the specific type of information you are searching for i.e. 'Legislation' (Figure 1). The word 'Legislation' will now replace 'All' in the dropdown. When you run your search by clicking the magnifying glass icon, you will only retrieve legislation results in the results list.

By searching on 'companies act 2006', for example, you will only retrieve one result for the Act in full, rather than a separate result for each Section of the Act (Figure 2).

If you are trying to find a specific section of the Act you can always rerun the search adding in 's168' for example, and you will be able to see all the relevant hits relating to that section.

As with the Advanced Search functionality discussed in the previous section of this guide, you can again filter your results and search within your results to focus in on the specific detail of the legislation you require.

Searching for Cases

Just as when searching for legislation you can use the dropdown (Figure 1) to select 'Cases' and ensure you are only searching for that category of result within Lexis+.

For example, if searching for the case Stack v Dowden in 'Cases', the results list will present the whole case under just one title rather than different results for all the separate results referring to that one case (Figure 3).

By clicking on the name of the case in the results list, it is possible to see all the other cases referring to and considered by this case as well as the case history and a case digest (Figure 4).
