The aim of writing for a lay audience is to communicate to a wider audience. Clarity is, therefore, a key factor, so you should:

  • Choose vocabulary carefully.
  • Pay attention to the structure and ordering of your paragraphs, points or slides.
  • Be aware of how you construct and link sentences.
  • Show your deep understanding.

If you can effectively explain your work to a lay audience, you are showing not only that you understand it, but also that you are aware of its importance and wider implications. 

It will also help you to produce better academic assignments, and will be an increasingly useful skill in the future.
