When you have finished your first draft, don’t think that the work is over! The first draft is just that – the first draft.

1. Get feedback.

Ask friends or family members to read through your draft and tell you:

  • If they can easily understand it.
  • What questions they have.
  • If you gave enough background.
  • Whether your analogies or examples are clear.

2. Proofread / Edit.

  • Proofread for mistakes
  • Edit to make things clearer, and
  • Act on the feedback you receive
  • Read your text out loud to check punctuation and phrasing. If it is hard, change it.

It takes time and patience - but is worth it!

Now, choose the sentences below which would be better for communicating with a lay audience.
