The types of English you find in poetry, newspapers, novels, the BBC website, and so on are all different. They have different types of words, phrases, levels of formality, and different grammar and structure. So, it’s not surprising that academic writing is special in some ways.

So, what’s different about the language – the grammar and the structure – that you need for academic writing? This mini-module will answer that question and it will show you, step by step, how to develop your skills in the foundations of grammar for academic writing.

This Mini-module begins with a self-test. This is completely optional and is really just a way for you to find your strengths and weaknesses in English grammar. This can help you to choose which sections of the Mini-module you want to concentrate on. There is a similar self-test at the end so you can see your progress.

Each page in this Mini-module has "Previous" and "Next" buttons as well as the Menu on the right for quick navigation to any section. You don't have to go through all the sections or do them in order. if you find that you are struggling with a section, you can always go back to a previous section.
