Searching for ebooks

When browsing the library catalogue, Discovery, select Full text online if you only want the search results to show ebook availability. 

You can find this option on the left hand side, under the heading Refine your results. You can also specify a date range and select subject areas of interest to help you narrow your search further.


Accessing ebooks

1. When browsing search results there will be a link that says Available Online if there is an ebook option for this item. Click this link.

 

2. The name of the supplier will be indicated and a link to access the ebook will be provided:

  • Access this ebook via EBC/Proquest.  [Ebook Central/ProQuest is the supplier]
  • Access this ebook via EBSCO Academic Collection [EBSCO is the supplier]

 

3. If you are asked to login, enter your LSBU username and password.

Your LSBU username is the first part of your LSBU email address e.g. s1234567 or smitha

If you are not prompted but cannot view the full text, look for an option that says Access via your Institution or Login with Shibboleth.

 

4. You can now read the whole ebook online:

 

1. If an online version is available for a book on your reading list, you will see a link that says View online.

 

2. Click View online to go straight to the ebook.

 

or

 

2. Click the title of the book to view the supplier information.

Scroll down to Links & Availability. The name of the supplier will be indicated and a link to access the ebook will be provided:

  • Access this ebook via EBC/Proquest.  [Ebook Central/ProQuest is the supplier]
  • Access this ebook via EBSCO Academic Collection [EBSCO is the supplier]
 

 

3. If you are asked to login, enter your LSBU username and password.

Reading ebooks offline

Depending on licencing, entire ebooks or individual chapters can be downloaded and read offline on multiple devices. The restriction will depend on the licence and in some instances you may not be able to read ebooks offline.

The restriction may also depend on the ebook provider e.g. EBSCO allows full text download if it is part of the subscription Academic Complete only. Subscription information may be specified in the supplier information under Availability.


Issues accessing ebooks?

If you have an issue accessing an ebook, get in touch via MyAccount or Live Chat (widget in the bottom right hand corner). Please include the following details, to enable staff to help you efficiently:

- Title and author or ISBN of the ebook

- The link you are using and where you got it from e.g. reading list or library catalogue

- Your details, so we can inform you when it is fixed
