Who we are and what we do


The Academic skills team are here to help you prepare for, write and reflect on the work, assignments and exams you are set throughout your degree programme. The team can also offer advice about using language to write well in an academic style and tone of voice. 

Throughout the duration of your time at LSBU, the team will be available to teach you about:

  • Developing good reading practices
  • Planning and structuring an essay
  • Thinking critically and incorporating evidence
  • Adopting an appropriate writing tone and style, including good use of grammar
  • Giving a good presentation

The Study Skills Handbook series


There are some great books in the LSBU library collection that can help you get a jump start on refining your study skills. Whilst you won't be able to borrow these titles from us just yet, you might be able to find them in your local library. We really like the Study Skills Handbook series by Stella Cottrell - they cover a wide range of topics. See some suggestions below:

Your Skills For Success team are here to support your development in academic practices, information and digital skills, maths and stats and English language through our programme of regular workshops, drop-in support sessions and appointments – in-person and online.
