You might have some questions about critical thinking. For example: What is critical thinking? Why is it important in higher education?  Is it difficult? How does it affect assignments?

It is important, but the good news is that anyone can learn this skill with a little knowledge and some practice. You will get a lot out of critical thinking, including producing better assignments. 

 


Overview of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking involves making your own judgements using evidence. In other words it involves being sceptical and not automatically accepting everything you read or hear. Critical thinking overview

As you can see in the diagram, to be a critical thinker, you need to:

  • Do research using good sources,
  • Ask questions, 
  • Stop and think,
  • Notice mistakes in arguments,
  • Check original sources
