Learning Online
What is it?
Online learning (or e-learning) is where you access course materials, participate in discussions, and complete assignments via the internet.
Why is it important?
It is important because it is becoming a normal way to do things. It is also more accessible for most people because:
- You can do it at home
- You can do it anytime - you can watch a video when it is convenient for you
- Materials and guides of all kinds are available online
- There is a lot of choice
Examples
Here are some of the main examples of online learning that you may encounter:
- Synchronous learning - when you do something live, such as watch a lecture as it is happening.
- Asynchronous learning - when you do something at a different time, such as watch a recording of a lecture.
- Hybrid learning - when you learn in a mixed way, perhaps partly on campus, partly online.
- Support services - help is available online.
- Moodle - is an example of a "Virtual Learning Environment" (VLE) which hosts resources for a course.
- LinkedIn Learning - is an example of a site which has videos and courses
- Skills for Study - is a site for learning study skills, such as academic writing or critical thinking.
