Mini-module: Quick Guide to Critical Writing

The top ten tips for showing critical thinking in your writing. This mini-module is for you if you are being a critical thinker, but you are not sure how to show this in your writing.

Third Tip:
Show confidence and voice Page 5 of 13

In academic writing you will often need to give your judgements. You will often have to argue for or against something. This is not the same as writing what other people have said, because you will have to persuade the reader by giving evidence and arguments.

This means that you have a position and you have to give evidence or the reasons for it.  It is good to have a position, and it takes a bit of confidence to hold a position rather than just to report what other people have said.

You can think of this as showing your own "voice".

How does this show critical thinking?

Having a voice shows that you have understood the ideas that you have read, and it shows that you are thinking for yourself.
