Staff guide to Reading Lists Online

Guidelines

Best practice when preparing your reading list

1. Most reading lists have Core and Optional recommendations:

Core Materials:  Titles which are essential for students to read in order to complete the module We recommend no more than 5 and a maximum of 10 titles
Optional Materials:  All other reading which is supplementary to the core titles and useful to complete the module

We recommend no more than 10 optional titles for taught modules

Optional items will only be purchased if budget allows.

2. Consider dividing your reading list into weekly sections:
Weekly sections are a good way to indicate to your students that they are expected to read or use a resource at a certain point of the module.

3. Electronic resources:

We adopt a “digital first” approach to learning resource procurement, with physical materials purchased to compliment the online collection wherever possible.

All Core items on reading lists should be accessible in e-format, such as e-book, online journal article, chapter scan, or webpage, to support hybrid learning. Unfortunately, not all textbooks are available electronically. Please be prepared to identify chapters to scan, or suggest an alternative title for books not available in e-format. Contact us if you want to access our supplier's book catalogue to identify e-books for purchase.
