LSBU Harvard Referencing: Book (edited book)

Best Practice tips

Place of Publication

Use the first place listed on the copyright page.

For an American place of publication, add the state after the city e.g. Boston, Massachusetts.

BE CONSISTENT! If you use a variation in referencing such as ed. for editors or Boston, MA. for the place of publication, make sure you use the variation throughout.

Finding the year of publication in a book

If the year of publication is not clear look for the latest copyright date. This is next to the copyright sign © usually on the reverse of the title page. Do not use a reprint date.

Format of the reference

You will need:

  • Name of the editor(s)
  • Year of publication
  • Title of the book
  • Edition of the book if it is later than the first
  • Place of publication
  • Publisher

Format:

Editor’s Surname, Initials. (ed.) or (eds.) (Year of publication) Title of the book. Edition if later than the first e.g. 2nd ed. Place of Publication: Publisher.

Example:

Ezra, E. (ed.) (2020) European cinema. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

In-text citation: (Ezra, 2020)
