LSBU Harvard Referencing: Translated works

Best Practice tips

Referencing works in languages other than English

First check with your lecturer if it’s acceptable for you to reference works in other languages. Otherwise, reference the work in the same way you would reference a work in the English language.

Format of the reference

You will need:

  • Name of the author(s)
  • Year of publication
  • Title of the book
  • Name of the translator(s)
  • Place of publication
  • Publisher

Format:

Author’s surname, Initials. (Year of publication) Title of the book. Translated by Initials Surname of translator(s). Place of publication: Publisher

Example:

Cohen, J.L. and Benton, T. (2014) Le Corbusier le grand. Translated by J. Tittensor. London: Phaidon Press.

In-text citation: (Cohen and Benton)
